Fairy Tail: the Movie Phoenix Priestess Review

If at any point you were interested in watching Fairy Tail but were like, “ZOMG there’s soooo many episodes” or “I’m not picking up what you’re putting down,” then never fear…that’s what movies are for!

Just like many long-running anime, Fairy Tail has a movie of its own and it is very indicative of what you would see normally in the show. Is it a good movie? Yeah, I’d say. Do you have to have seen the show to know what the heck is going on?
Eh, probably. The movie kind of relies on the fact that you already know that our heroes are wizards and are already familiar with their names. It only really follows the main squad of heroes: Natsu, Happy, Lucy, Gray, Erza, Wendy, Carla with cameos of some other chief characters such as Master Makarov, Gajeel and Pantherlily.

But like I said, if you’re curious about what you’ll be walking into as far as watching Fairy Tail goes, you’re pretty much set. If you recall in some of my previous reviews how the action of the show goes, that’s evident very strong in this movie. There is a good amount of emotion and the music is still top notch, adding in its own songs that are not previously played in the main show. The animation is relatively the same, but the weirdest part about it is that it’s colored a little differently. Character’s clothing becomes lighter and for some reason Wendy’s hair looks more purple than its normal shade of blue.

Unlike most anime movies, though, they don’t necessarily over exaggerate things, like say a normal attack they won’t add any special CGI to it. Whenever I watch it, I feel like I’m watching an hour-and-a-half long episode of Fairy Tail rather than watching it as a movie, which some could see as a bad thing.

See, an anime movie is supposed to envelope all the great things about the show that made it popular enough to spawn a movie. That’s what makes Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan so great. It has all the great DBZ tropes but also adds in some mythos to the characters and Planet Vegeta as well as giving us, arguably, the strongest DBZ character to date. Though still not really canon, it’s set up in a way where you could let that slide.

The Fairy Tail movie is, assumedly, within the timeline, as there is a break between the third and fourth season where this could have gone down, but I’m not too sure. It also doesn’t add very much and ends extremely abruptly and actually in a very sad way. But NaLu shippers like the ending enough for what it could mean…so by that I mean I’m with them, because I do ship NaLu like crazy.

The story is okay, it gets more interesting as you get into more of a spoiler-y territory, though. Basically all you need to know is that a long time ago there was a ceremony suddenly interrupted that forced a young woman, Eclaire, into exile from her village carrying an odd stone that a snobby prince is looking for in order to resurrect a powerful monster. Eclaire comes across Lucy, and once they learn about Eclaire’s mission, Fairy Tail’s strongest team gets on the job. Also, Gajeel and Pantherlily are spies. So that’s cool.

The characters are exactly the way you would expect them to be, with Lucy maybe a little dependent on Natsu rather than the others but hey, they’re best friends, what can ya do? The villains each, with the exception of one, have a type of magic that we’ve seen already, like Wind Magic or Magic Nullification. Shadow Magic was cool but had such an anti-climactic battle that I’d hardly give it any points. There’s really not much to say regarding characters are only Eclaire gets any development and I guess Lucy is the one that grows in the end as she sticks by Eclaire the most to show her the wonders that magic can give someone.

Like I said, the animation is cool. It’s as good as you would see in a regular episode of Fairy Tail, which is definitely not a bad thing but you wish in some parts they could maybe have improved it, just not through CGI but touching up a few things and not lightening up the characters for some reason. It just made them look weird to me, that’s really my biggest complaint about the movie. That and the ending. But, whatever.

I think that the biggest problem other people will experience watching this for the first time is not really knowing what’s going on and who’s who and why the guild is called Fairy Tail. But I know why. You should, too. It’s a movie much better for people who know the show (particularly past episode 123 of season 3, just saying…) and are interested in seeing a movie in which case the Fairy Tail wizards have to take a trip outside of Fiore in search of cool history magic secrets and stuff.

For those at least interested in Fairy Tail, I’d say either watch this or the first few arcs of season 1 to get a feel for the show. It’s not necessarily the same experience, but it all depends on how much time you have. The movie is available on iTunes and Hulu, I believe, just so you know…and so you have no excuse! Regardless, though, I definitely enjoyed watching it and love watching it again and again.

So, guys, this is it. Our final week of anything Fairy Tail. I’ve hoped you’ve enjoyed reading about it as much as I have writing about it, and I definitely look forward to doing more as more of the show is released bit by bit! Don’t count me out of anime, yet, though, as next week we return to an old review…we take a spoiler-induced look at Death Note! Which means one thing…LIGHT VERSUS L—TENNIS STYLE!
