Blue Nexus #2: The Phoenix and the Martian

Kyle’s Nexus bracelet brought with it much more mystery to his friends. Where’d he get it? Why was it kind of glowing? Was it some sort of enhancement for his lacrosse playing? Kip thought it was going to be feeding Kyle energy, so Kyle told him that it was something along those lines. Still, they remained a little curious.
Kyle left the bracelet on during practice, wary of it not to take any damage. However, when he did get hit by a slap from a random stick, the bracelet was perfectly fine, which relieved Kyle. It seemed that it was pretty well put together, and it was pretty well connected to Kyle, barely moving whenever he moved his arms. It was fitted nicely, as it didn’t suffocate his hand and he barely even remembered he was wearing it.
He contemplated becoming Blue Nexus every now and again, but was unsure of it as the transformation created a burst of light, which at night would attract attention and during the day he hardly had any time to himself. The only time he could would be if he were alone in the shed sometime around dusk, but then he ran the risk of Kip and Luke showing up and discovering his power. He couldn’t do that, as it would put them in danger.
Three days passed after his initial transformation, after the defeat of Gargador. The beast hadn’t shown back up and Kyle had seen no signs of him. His small town, Adelita, received lots of news regarding the alien attack, but nobody knew what to call Hood Nexus, just calling him, “The guy with the blue shine around him.”  Criminal activity in the town was on the low, too, as it was very small and there wasn’t much to take. Besides, you’d have to be an idiot, as the population was pretty much tiny enough to where if someone was robbed the culprit could be found in a matter of days, maybe even the day of.
After practice on that Thursday afternoon, Kyle went to his school locker to retrieve a textbook he forgot to grab. Kip and Luke were still hanging out around school in a study session, so the three of them figured that they would be able to go home together. Kyle slung his jacket on, grateful for its warmth after running around in the cold for a little while, and then pulled out the textbook he’d forgotten.
The sound of the door trying to open rang throughout the hallway, shocking Kyle. He looked up, over to the door closest to him. Nothing stood there.
“Freshman,” he muttered, assuming that it was one of the younger breed who was staying after and forgot that the school was locked up after three.
However, this time the door on the opposite end of the hallway was opened. Forcibly. Kyle looked over, this time in great shock, to see what forced the door open. The door was hanging on a single hinge, and walking into the hallway, with loud footsteps, seemed to be a robot.
It four arms and two legs. Despite it being partly silhouetted, the robot seemed to be of a normal build—at least, what Kyle had seen the most on the news. It was grey with red eyes. It’s arms and legs didn’t look too big and they weren’t shining. The robot walked slowly toward Kyle, clenching four fists.
“I can only assume you’re looking for me,” he said, raising his arm. He looked around, wondering if anyone was still in the hallway.
“What. Is your. Name?” the robot asked. It seemed to be struggling to put out words. Perhaps some amateur villain found a way to track major power in Adelita and threw together a scrapheap like this.
“Blue Nexus,” Kyle said, swiping his fingers across the bracelet. He swung out his arms as he transformed into his alter ego. The black clothing replaced his school clothes instantly, the cloak coming on right over it, the hood shrouding his blue eyes. Blue lines ran up from his hand and his cheeks to the center of his back, and he felt a major boost in power. His muscles all over bulked up and his vision cleared up a little. He blinked and his eyes changed into their fine blue color. He put up fisticuffs, as if waiting for the robot to attack.
“I will. Crush the. Super.” The robot launched toward Kyle, flailing its arms wildly. Kyle took a step back in confusion, then figured he had really no choice.
With heightened reflexes, what almost felt like foresight, Kyle ducked under the first fist, then grabbed the second one and put it behidnt he robot’s back, nearly slamming it into the lockers before stopping.
            “Property damage…no,” he breathed.
He burst to his left, flying out of the hallway still holding the robot in the same position. He let go, allowing the robot to plummet to the ground. It hit the ground, then rolled. Kyle dropped easily, allowing his hands to glow as the energy within them grew.
“Well have it, then,” he beckoned.
The robot charged once again, and Kyle was ready for it this time. He ducked under two of the fists, leaning back, then fired an energy blast at the robot. Rather easily, half of the robot ripped away, going airborne. Kyle leapt into the air, punching straight through the robot head, gripping its motherboard, then allowed it to drop.
When the top half of the body hit the ground, the two halves simultaneously exploded, creating a small fire that Kyle put out with a strong gust of his cloak. He maintained his flight, then floated back up the hallway, running inside. When he reached his locker he chuckled slightly, swiping his finger on the bottom side of the bracelet, returning to his normal state.
He examined the motherboard in his hand. It looked pretty simple, perhaps he grabbed the wrong thing. It wasn’t big at all, maybe the size of his two thumbs combined. Not nearly enough to operate a sentient robot, at least. Whoever it was really was an amateur robot builder, probably an amateur villain, too. But at least he had his first enemy!
Kyle put the motherboard away in his jacket pocket, closed his locker, and slung his backpack over one shoulder. He turned toward the door and jolted to a stop.
“Oh, jeez, hey guys,” he said, placing a hand over his fast-beating heart. “Did not see you there.”
They couldn’t hear him as they were standing on the opposite side of the locked doors. He opened the doors, walking into the sunlight, not bothering to repeat himself. Kip instantly took hold of his wrist and pointed to the Nexus bracelet. Kyle’s heart sunk.
“Yeah I bet this is boosting you a little, isn’t it?” asked Kip.
“Oh, oh you mean the bracelet,” Kyle said, stupidly. He knew he was fighting a losing battle, as if the battle had any room to be fought.
“Yeah, no duh, Sherlock,” Kip said, tightening his grip. “You know, the bracelet that makes you like the freaking Phoenix or something!”
“Well Phoenix can’t fly on his own, actually,” Kyle said like an idiot.
“Even better, then,” Luke said. “How long have you had it?”
Kip let go of Kyle’s wrist. Kyle replied, “Only for about four days. When Gargador attacked, that’s when I found it in my shed.”
            “Gargador?” asked Kip.
“It was in your shed and you never noticed it?” asked Luke.
Kyle sighed, then explained to the duo what transpired after they left, about Gargador and Hood Nexus, but left out the part where he actually went into the Nexus, instead just saying that he transformed and fought alongside Hood Nexus. He did mention that’s where he got his powers from.
Kip and Luke nodded accordingly, their faces matching those of people who were talking to a crazy person. It was crazy, all of it was. Adelita was a boring as heck town, why would it suddenly spring up its own super-heroes? Or, maybe even two, wherever it was that Hood Nexus liked to take up residency.
When Kyle finished, it wasn’t too long since he left out Aequitas, he let the moment settle, allowing his friends to mull over what he’d just said.
“So, what, you just have this power now?” asked Luke. “Like you haven’t really done anything…except, well, beat up that robot?”
            “Pretty much,” Kyle said, shrugging.
“And we, well, we and that other guy, are the only ones that know about it?” asked Kip.
“Well, I mean, I’m pretty sure that Gargador knows, too,” said Kyle, calmly.
“So a giant monster capable of spitting fire from his mouth, one that can kill you, knows about your secret identity?” asked Luke.
“He doesn’t know my name, though, and besides, he probably won’t be coming back here anytime soon since he thinks there are two people with the Nexus in Adelita,” Kyle replied. “And I think I’m strong enough to be able to take him. I ripped through that robot with just one punch, how hard can an alien be?”
“He calls himself a War God, I think he’s supposed to be taken seriously,” Kip said.
“The boys are right, Blue Nexus,” a masculine voice said above them. The three looked up, and saw a man faze down through the metal canopy to be standing between Luke and Kyle. All of them froze, trying quickly to figure out who the newcomer was.
The man was either a super hero or super-villain, based on his attire. His dominant color was red, and while it didn’t scream out at the, it was rather prominent. He wore a red mask that covered only around his eyes and nose, but he had ear-covers that were pointy On his back instead of a cape rested two long, red wings, and on the end of the wings seemed to be talons that served dually as gloves. Along his chest he wore a red vest that was riddled with various trick bombs and small weaponry. His pants were tight as well as red. He seemed to be in the shape of a bird, giving away who he was.
“You’re the Phoenix,” Kyle said. Duh, he’d seen him tons of times! Nobody was sure if the Phoenix was supernatural or not, like if he had super strength or speed, but what was for sure was that he was a genius in combat, able to take down foes that gave the super-powered Riko a run for their money. Another trope of his was to chest death almost regularly, hence his name.
“Gargador is what, around space, people would call a demi-War God,” Phoenix said. Kyle wasn’t sure if he was deepening his voice to sound more commanding or if that was just his normal voice. If so, he was envious of it, being young still. “We haven’t fought yet but I know he’s given the Nexus folk some trouble lately.” He smiled. “Then again, they haven’t seen one as strong as you in a while.”
            “Me?” asked Kyle.
“Wait, seriously, him?” asked Kip. “Kyle barely plays on the lacrosse team but he can apparently keep up with aliens?”
Phoenix flicked his head toward the back-field where Kyle destroyed the robot. “I’ve been tracking that thing all day, it was so weak it barely showed up on my radar. Looks like you got to it before I did, did you save any of it?”
Kyle reached into his pocket, then gave Phoenix the motherboard. Phoenix nodded, placing it into a pocket in his vest.
“You busy?” he asked, patting Kyle on the shoulder.
“Uh, oh, uh, for, uh, what?” asked Kyle.
“Well you’re a four year old super-hero, I’d be honored if I could show you around, sort of give you an update on what we’ve been up against lately,” Phoenix said, crossing his arms.
“Ah, what the hell, Kyle, now you get to go hang out with the super heroes?” asked Kip. “That’s not even fair, man.”
“Kip I’m not moving,” Kyle said. “Besides, I do want to be a super-hero. If my parents were part of the Nexus, then I have to know what kind of trouble they got themselves into, maybe even help their cause.”
Phoenix put up his hands in defense. “Whoa, buddy, I’m not talking about the intergalactic stuff. Where there are super heroes there are super villains and we’ve got a bunch of them in recent years. Gargador, the Alchemist, Draegon, and Fire Tiger to name a few.”
“Fire Tiger looks so cool, though,” Luke muttered.
“Not when you’re fighting him,” Phoenix pointed out. “So, Blue Nexus, you coming?”
Kyle raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, but, I haven’t told anyone about my super hero name, how’d you find out about it?”
“Oh, I was just guessing that’s what you were called,” Phoenix said. “The other guy doesn’t like being referred to as a super-hero, he prefers to just be a ‘Nexus Guardian’ or whatever, so I’d screw with him and call him Blue Nexus. But since you like it, you can be the Blue Nexus!”
Phoenix reached out, his wings extending with him. He gripped the talons, which initiated his flight sequence as he began to float in the air, lightly flapping his wings to stay up.
“Well, alright, I guess I’ll be seeing you guys in the morning,” Kyle said, turning back to Kip and Luke.
“Is this going to be a regular thing?” asked Luke. “I’m not really okay with that.”
“Well it’s either that or without Kyle’s help Gargador and something worse team up and destroy Adelita, so, is it really a bad thing?” asked Kip.
Luke shrugged. “Alright but just remember: stranger danger.”
Kyle laughed, then transformed into Blue Nexus, initiating his flight sequence and floating in the air. “Indeed, sir.”
He looked to Phoenix, nodded, and the two were off. Phoenix gave his wings a hard flap, then turned right off of the balcony and soared into the air. Kyle followed, leaving his arms at his side and allowing the energy of the Nexus around him to propel him forward. Phoenix was already high in the air, higher than Kyle had gone before.
“Let’s see what you’ve got!” he shouted, turned north, and blasted off.
Kyle swung his arms and shot, like a bullet, away from the campus, almost catching up to Phoenix, who was no longer flapping his wings. Instead, he held out the talons in front of him and the wings stayed straight, two boosters on the ends of them keeping him up.
Kyle was alight with his blue aura, unaware if he could turn it on or off. At the moment it hardly mattered. Being a bright blue star in the twilight sky sounded pretty cool to him. Phoenix looked back to him with a smile, dipping down slightly to the left, then began to spiral down before straightening out. Kyle did the same, figuring that Phoenix was probably training him in how to fly, since Phoenix did it so often.
“We’ll go another couple miles and then stop!” shouted Phoenix.
            “Okay!” Kyle shouted in return.
Phoenix, on a sharp angle, turned up and raced into the clouds. Kyle followed, not at all feeling the temperature drop, though. He continued to chase Phoenix until the super hero stopped, and began to free-fall. Kyle immediately halted, too, and turned around, allowing himself to fall.
“Oh, no!” Kyle yelled. He had no idea he was so high in the air, they managed to get so far so fast. Now he was in panic mode, and in free-fall plummeting toward the Earth. He extended his arms out to try and slow down but couldn’t. Phoenix was smiling and laughing the whole way down.
What the heck kind of training was it if involved killing Kyle? He closed his eyes, concentrating hard on trying to fly, but all he could get was the energy around him. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. Of course!
Kyle clenched a fist, as if to grab the Nexus energy that was falling alongside him, and all of a sudden, he managed to stop. Phoenix looked back, then nodded and turned on his boosters, catching himself and levitating up to meet Kyle, who was calming down.
“You trying to kill me?” asked Kyle.
“Nah, just trying to help you out little buddy,” Phoenix said. He pointed to a tall building not too far from them, on the outskirt of town. “Let’s go.”
The two flew side-by-side to the building, not sharing many words outside of, “Land now.”
Phoenix touched down first, then Kyle second. Kyle reached to leave his Blue Nexus form, but Phoenix told him to stop.
“No, stay like that,” the hero instructed. “Even if one day we do discover our secret identities, it’s best to stay in our hero guises and use our code names, got it? Just in case someone decides to eavesdrop, and you know how fast info spreads these days.”
Kyle nodded. “Okay, I gotcha, Phoenix. So how’d you find me, anyway? Some kind of power grid or something?”
“Back at our base we do have something like that, yeah,” Phoenix admitted. “Once we saw the huge spike in power where your parents used to be, I was sent to check it out after I found the robot, which wanted to come after you, or rather your bracelet undoubtedly.”
“You knew my parents?” Kyle asked.
“The Nexus isn’t as subtle as it wants to be, it’s users aren’t hard to spot,” Phoenix said. “I knew of your parents, but I’m sorry to say I’ve never met them. But.” Phoenix, through the mask, gave Kyle a hard look. “You are not to go running after them half-cocked like I know you want to. They were captured by people Riko and I wouldn’t even screw with, so a four-day-old super hero would be dead the second they’re spotted.”
“Was it a War God?” Kyle asked.
“Definitely a War God, and we believe it’s Cata, one of the strongest,” Phoenix said.
“We…who is ‘we’ that you keep bringing up?” Kyle asked. “I thought you and Riko were the big duo?”
Phoenix shook his head. “Nah, there’s a team of us. Riko, myself, Eclipse, Lalay, and Morpho. We don’t have a name, just a base of operations.”
“Huh, never heard of the last three,” Kyle said. “Like you said, I’d kinda figure that they’d be talked about all the time like some of the other super heroes.”
“There’s a good reason we recruited them, and it’s not because of their lack of a spotlight,” Phoenix said. “It’s because we’re afraid that the sudden explosion of super-heroes, and with three Martians, a psychic from Orion Six, and Earth’s space travels are going to pretty much light a beacon to any of the crazies in the galaxy, or heck the known universe, that we have what they want: more power.”
“And I’d have to say that’s true, with Gargador showing up and all.”
“As well as the appearance of the Nexus back on Earth. It only showed up back in Rome before it moved onto various planets. Your parents, along with our Morpho, managed to uncover it again, and apparently exposed a few more people to it than they should have. The Nexus is a dangerous tool, and the War Gods are its number one enemy.”
“Why haven’t any War Gods shown up to Earth?”
“Because we’re lucky enough to have Eclipse. Orion Six and the War Gods have something of a long-held truce, and with Eclipse as one of its Lords they won’t dare strike us down, or else they’ll have to face all of the Orion planets. That’s something nobody wants, especially me, because I can barely handle four aliens.”
“There are a lot of them.”
“You don’t even know the half of it. But, there you go. Don’t go looking for your parents or else you’ll threaten to start a war that will destroy all known life in our galaxy.”
“Seems a bit drastic, don’t you think?”
“Well, okay, don’t go without Eclipse. And without lots, and lots of training.”
Kyle sighed, then crossed his arms. “Well that’s great, then how’s about some training on Earth? Whose our biggest threat?”
Phoenix chuckled. “Back when I started it was nothing but crime lords and a mad scientist here and there. Now that it’s been a while, almost three years, there’s an entire company that pretty much mass produces super-villains and is run by one of the worst, Draegon. But, we don’t really worry about that too much. Apparently the West has its own watcher and ghost that haunts him. Fire Tiger is a problem, and a growing one as he gets more popular. Now we’ve got Thunder and Lightning Tiger on occasion…”
Kyle raised an eyebrow as Phoenix seemed to trail off. He talked about a myriad of C-list or B-list super villains. Most of the main ones were either put away or pretty much frozen in space thanks to Riko. For the most part he made it sound like space was the Earth’s greatest threat, or at least, the potential for it. It was all very War of the Worlds sounding to him.
The seasoned super-hero also explained to Kyle just who to trust in the super-hero community, giving him the basics. The police were helpful but when it came to combat they could only get in the way, especially when it was about people of Kyle’s strength level. Having them help solve cases was one thing, but executing the case was another. The second a camera showed up, the fight had to be moved, as human super-villains were usually people who studied what they could of the super-heroes. Being that the town was small, Phoenix had no problem explaining to Kyle that fights in town were dangerous and needed to go to a more open area where no one could get hurt.
A beeping noise rang out as Phoenix finished explaining the latter point. He pressed an invisible button on the top of his vest.
“Go, it’s Phoenix,” he said. He laid his hand just over his ear, though Kyle could not hear anything out of it. “Got it.” He let go of the button, and looked at Kyle. “Sorry man, gotta go. Apparently we’ve got a couple of loose, intelligent, and genetically enhanced pro wrestlers on the loose. Undoubtedly from Riverville, but, we’ve got it. I’ll be seeing you, though!”
Phoenix turned around to run, but just before he took off, he turned around, smiling at Kyle. “Say, why don’t you go ahead and head on over to the Moon now, I think Riko’s up there, he can explain a little more.
With that, he leapt off the building and zoomed off, Kyle running after him.
“The Moon?” he shouted, his voice echoing off the buildings.
When Phoenix flew out of sight, definitely not out of mind, Kyle looked up. The sky was clear that day, so he could see the Moon peeping into the late-day sky. Was he just supposed to fly through the atmosphere and land on the rock?
He looked around, as if someone would help him out. He was probably supposed to be home by then, yet he could easily make up an excuse as to why he wasn’t there on time, like he had to stop at Kip or Luke’s place, or that tryouts ran longer, or that he had a run-in with a wild dog. Sadly, that latter scenario had happened three times previous on his way home from school, so he felt it was fairly valid.
Cautiously, Kyle began to float into the air. He looked up, and looked both ways. He was not checking for cars, but rather, for airplanes. It felt odd to be doing so. Nobody else had to do that, not even the people in the towers at airports. They had radars, and Kyle had his 20-20 vision.
With a burst of speed and power, Kyle shot away from the building, leaving small cracks in the flooring of it and sending almost all of the dust it had collected off of it. He zoomed upward, still not feeling the temperature drop or feeling any difficulty breathing. His arms were fully extended out, he could feel a slight tug at him coming from Earth’s gravity, but it wasn’t anything like jumping up in the air. Rather, it felt like he was easily pushing himself against a rubber-band.
He quickly looked left and right again, checking for airplanes as he crossed thousands of miles into the air, well above the clouds. The sky was golden, and all below him looked like what Renaissance painters imagined heaven being like. He suspended himself for just a moment.
The fluff balls that were clouds floated golden in the lit sky, the sun a much bigger ball of fire in the sky. He shielded his eyes from it, wishing his hood had a visor of sorts. The moon also seemed a lot bigger, yet he still couldn’t see the stars at all, as it was far too bright. He wished he could take out his phone and snap a picture, but then he would probably freeze, suffocate, and definitely start to fall without any chance of transforming and catching himself in time before dying.
Kyle shrugged. Maybe some other time. He looked back up, and continued onward, feeling the tug of gravity much stronger since he was restarting and lost a lot of his momentum. He surged his arms and energy forward, propelling him past the golden state of the Earth’s sky and into the void.
Kyle shut his eyes, completely forgetting that he wouldn’t be able to breathe in space. Yet his energy was surging him forward, and the last thing he wanted to do was be stuck in between Earth and space.
When at last the tug of gravity was no more, Kyle stopped and in took a deep breath. But there was nothing there. He tried breathing again, and still nothing. Yet, he was fine. His face wasn’t turning blue and he wasn’t ready to explode from the pressure. In fact, he felt completely normal. He looked up again, seeing the moon as a great big asteroid hovering over the Earth thousands of miles away.
The trip up into space took maybe ten minutes. Kyle wondered just how fast he’d been moving, and how much faster he could go without the tug of Earth. Or, perhaps, with the tug of Earth. He gulped at the thought of the return trip, as he imagined himself hurtling downward like a meteorite toward his city.
He shook the thought away as he floated upward toward the moon. His blue aura was much more prevalent than before. Perhaps it was that which was keeping him alive in space. He felt no beat down from the sun, which was humongous, nor did he feel any cold.
Kyle touched down on the moon, feeling very light as he did so, but not to the point where he needed to throw up. That would have been nasty.
From one of the nearby craters did a person, sitting in a meditative stance, rise up. The thing turned, revealing an alien the likes of which Kyle had yet to see.
It was green with great big bug eyes. It’s head was not round and almost looked like a square, with two slits for a nose. Its muscles were rather large, though, and seemed, at the moment, to be bipedal. It wore a black cape with a black shirt and black pants, almost like what Kyle had one. Except the alien wore no gloves or shoes and had no armor or weapons of any sort. The alien smiled, it’s smile much larger than the average human’s. It looked odd against the square shape of its head.
“Hello, young Blue Nexus,” said the alien. “And welcome to the Earth’s moon.”
“Uh, hey, I was told I could find a certain alien called Riko here,” Kyle said. “Is he around the…crater…or something?”
The alien laughed. “Ah, yes, I haven’t exposed my true alien form to the Earth in quite some time, it’d be easy for you to forget.”
“Wait, you’re Riko? This is what a Martian looks like?” asked Kyle.
Riko nodded. His neck was kind of thick and laced with veins, almost like a pro wrestler. He shifted out of his meditative stance, floating down to be about ten yards away from Kyle, standing perfectly still on the moon. Neither of them were moving, and it was dead silent. How Kyle was able to speak with him at all was a mystery. How the Martian was breathing was a mystery.
            What was going on?
“Calm down, Blue Nexus,” Riko said, raising a hand. “I can see the troubled look on your face. Trust me, when I first brought Phoenix into space he was worried too, but now he is perfectly fine to come up here when he wishes.”
“Then how come I can hear you without needing a mask, or, how am I breathing without needing a mask?” asked Kyle.
“Because the Nexus grants you these abilities, it bends space around you to keep you, or whatever race that has its power, alive,” Riko explains. “And in turn you can bend it, to allow yourself to fly or to shoot energy blasts. I am able to survive here because on Mars, we have very little atmosphere, if any at all. Thus I am used to the exposure and the radiation, so it won’t harm me.”
“Then how come Phoenix isn’t dead from its exposure?” Kyle asked.
“His equipment is partly from Earth but a majority comes from a planet we once visited known as Witzaria. They’re good friends of ours; mostly mine because they have good ties with Mars.”
Kyle nodded. “So then, I can go pretty much anywhere I want in space? Like, to Mars or to this Orion Six planet I keep hearing about?”
“Yes, you can, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Despite what Phoenix may tell you about with all of the threats out in space, the Earth still needs you here, as its defender with the Nexus. In fact, that’s the whole reason I brought you out here.”
“Oh, really? To make me stay on Earth or something?”
“No,” Riko said. “Blue Nexus, you, whoever you are, have been granted with an incredible privilege. This comes at a time where the Earth needs you most. Those on the side of good are getting far outmatched by the force of evil, and we desperately needed your help. I’m aware that Phoenix has introduced to you the concept of our team, the ones to defend the Earth from its greatest threats. And that is the real reason you’re here.”
Kyle’s heart started beating. “So then, you really mean…”
“Yes, Kyle,” Riko said. Suddenly, behind him, the crater began to lower, revealing a doorway that sealed off what appeared to be a tunnel down into the Moon. “We would like you to join us. We would like you to become a Zanderian.”

Next time: He's in! What's the base like? And how will he be able to settle into it all, if he even can? Find out in "Blue Nexus #3--Community"
