The Flash "Things You Can't Outrun" Review

Well is Future Barry calling it right now.

I won't even bother with the excuse that this review is going up later than usual because I wanted to wait for the West Coast because if I really were to wait for that then I would be up until midnight and really folks I'm not feeling it on Tuesdays. But, I mean...it's still here?

This episode follows the Arrow Season 1 formula of having a villain per week but at least this show isn't riddling them with arrows in the chest. Well, I mean, they've died but at least they're in a safe prison beneath some scientists. That's a good idea, right?

Nah.

Really the villain, The Mist, was pretty useless to the plot other than the team to get some symbolic moments in as well as built a super-prison, which I'm surprised A.R.G.U.S. hasn't built yet. I'm also surprised they haven't shown up yet. Episode 7 maybe...

This week instead focused on what went down the night of the Particle Accelerator exploding as well as Barry coming to terms with the fact that despite his speed, he can't be everywhere at the same time. That's what side-kicks are for. There are also flashbacks again but unlike last week these were interesting as they played heavily on Ronnie Raymond's involvement and shows his "death" (I say death because, dude, you can't kill Firestorm) at the hands of the Particle Accelerator. And it gives us some feed into Wells besides the closing scene like usual.

The episode starts with Iris and Barry seeing a zombie movie and then the Mist kills a couple guys, and so the next morning Joe and Barry--working much better now that Joe is cool with Barry being a super hero (if Oliver Queen approves, you should too, detective). Barry is able to deduce that it was a meta-human but isn't quite sure what his powers are, and that they really need to get on figuring that out before anyone else gets hurt.

Joe, however, arrives at Barry's place to help renew the case that will prove the innocence of Barry's father, seeing as how now he knows it was a super-human that was the cause of death, and now it would be easier to go into the case with a much more level head. Eddie shows up and draws Joe away, so Barry heads on over to S.T.A.R. Labs.

Once there, Wells and Cisco decide to develop the Particle Accelerator, or what remains of it, as a prison, since it is very large and its materials could easily harbor them. They ask Caitlin to go with them but she has a flashback that basically shows her and Ronnie being all cuddly the night of the accident, and shows that for a second, everything was going fine until the "bang," as Ronnie put it, and he and Cisco set off. Because apparently he isn't so much a quarterback as he is an engineer in the show, okay then.

Barry brings Caitlin back to his lab where they get to talk a little about Ronnie and Caitlin's past, where she reveals that he was the only one that could make her happy or sad or basically feel any emotions whatsoever. She even says they were like, "fire and ice," and if you get that reference then you will know why I chuckled and smiled brightly at that little remark. Talk about clever, I never thought they would make it so obvious on the show! LOVE IT.

Anyway, Barry gets alerted of The Mist at the mall and goes to stop him, but gets infected with his poison gas and rushes back to S.T.A.R. Labs where they are able to treat him. This was one of those moments that really stood out to me in an odd way. To compare the two shows: on Arrow if Oliver were to get poisoned or shot or whatever, there would be a very dire situation and everything would be serious and tense. On The Flash, while the situation is desperate, I can't help but feel there's more of a playful vibe to it, as Cisco is still making jokes while he does things on purpose and Caitlin is so serious that it's almost humorous, like she can't take a joke.

I really do like that the two shows are able to distinguish so much as far as tone goes because a serious version of The Flash would be fun but not too fun. It just makes everything seem more light-hearted and comic-book-like when it's colorful and not too edgy. It brings a certain charm to the table that makes you laugh instead of feel absolute dread for the characters.

But The Flash doesn't have Komodo so I mean...

So Barry survives (what a shock) and takes it all back up with Joe, telling him that the meta-human can become the poison gas. There's a little bit of some random exposition as Barry tells Joe that he is totally capable of breaking out his father but at least Joe is there to calm Barry down and tell him that if Barry were to do that, his father would be on the run forever. Joe decides, though, that enough is enough, and goes to Iron Heights to see Barry's father. Joe tells him that he has decided to bust Barry's father out of prison and get the rightful person who did this, with Barry's father in tears. Aw.

The team at S.T.A.R. Labs are able to identify who The Mist is and Barry heads out to defeat him after Caitlin gives him the antidote, which is good solely for one-time use. The Mist manages to get to Joe before Barry arrives but at least Barry can save him with antidote. And in a pretty cool chase scene--the effects on this show are so good!--Barry is able to tire out The Mist due to his instability to control his gaseous form, and knocks him out, bringing him back to S.T.A.R. Labs Penitentiary for the Super-People (hopefully they give it a name sometime because I obviously can't come up with one for it).

Thus, the episode ends with Thawne and Iris telling Joe that they are dating (a really useless subplot if you ask me but whatever) and Wells saying that the super-humans will be perfectly save down there, dropping the helpful hint that he's gotten used to his sort of thing. Or that he'd been waiting for the particle accelerator for centuries. Or the way he looked longingly at the Flash costume.

Do I really need to spell this out anymore HE IS THE FUTURE BARRY ALLEN PEOPLE HE HAS TO BE.

I hate waiting.

Luckily, there is one thing I don't have to wait long for: Felicity is coming to The Flash next week! Yes so after a very exciting episode with the continued great interactions of the characters and come very warm-hearted moments we now get some major events headed our way on The Flash as Felicity is coming to town to see a not-in-coma Barry Allen while, guess what, Captain Cold makes his first appearance as well! :O Felicity and Captain Cold?! This is crazy exciting! Be sure to tune in next week...and watch Arrow tomorrow...

But seriously, The Flash is amazing. Future Barry.
Calling it.
