It's a new year everyone, and this is the month of beginnings. January is the beginning of the year, the beginning of the resolutions, and the beginning of all the TV promos for the shows that went on winter break.
Oh, and Agent Carter, that shows pretty funny.
But since this is the month of beginnings, and because I wanted to do another theme month after how much fun I had with Blackest Month while reading "Blackest Night" and doing the Black Nexus arc in my "Blue Nexus" story here on the blog. So, I figured, why not do a whole bunch of #1s?
Thanks to the ever wonderful comixology.com (no, I am not sponsored by them, I'm just helping you out because that's what friends are for), I managed to find four #1s (three for free, one I paid for at a majorly discounted price) to review over the month. Some old, some current, and some a lot worse than people wanted.
Because the New 52.
Today, though, we're not talking about any of that. I figured that the best way to start off the month, no, year, was to talk about one of the most respectable, smart, and overall most heroic comic book character of them all.
Deadpool.
It's time to shatter that Fourth Wall.
So today, we're taking a look at "Deadpool: Merc With A Mouth #1" to see just how crazy things can get.
Our cover is alright. The only confusing thing is the woman in the back. We only meet one woman in the book and she's a blonde. There really isn't much to it besides the obvious "paint" design of it, and the best part of the cover is the dialogue at the bottom. "Zombie-Cavemen!" Oh, well, it's worth picking up for just that alone, really.
Our comic opens with our mercenary being stuffed into a small pod and getting fried in a crash landing into the Savage Land. And I promise, friends, that we will never see the savage land again this entire ye--
You're not supposed to see that!
Deadpool, his skin practically turned to charcoal, meets Ka-Zar, a warrior of the Savage Land and part-time friend of the Avengers. Ka-Zar asks where Deadpool has come from, so Deadpool explains that six-hours earlier, he negotiated a two million dollar deal (one million for the landing, the other million for the mission) with A.I.M. to drop into the Savage Land, retrieve a package before Hydra can, and get the heck out of there. The only reason they sent him in--why would that be a bad idea, it's like adding Punisher to the Anti-Registration team!--was because he could withstand the drop.
Deadpool, in his ways of mentally talking to himself that he is so well-known for, makes a good point about A.I.M. and Hydra: "I thought these guys were Hydra." "A.I.M. Interchangeable." Because they pretty much are interchangeable! What the heck, Marvel. At least DC only has one sketchy acronym...I think.
And no, A.I.M. is not AIM, the messaging system. But they may as well be just as evil.
Ka-Zar, recognizing Deadpool for some reason, brings him to a cliff where we see that some of the inhabitants of the Savage Land, the Headhunters (great name) have created a giant stone statue of Deadpool. Overcome by his own ego, Deadpool actually breaks down and has no words.
Deadpool was speechless in a not-stupid way whaaaaa.
Ka-Zar leaves to hunt down Hydra while Deadpool decides to get closer to the Headhunters. Through his mad ninja skills of punching her in the face, Deadpool meets with his promised A.I.M. contact, Dr. Swanson. Deadpool, like any egotistical man, begins to have fantasies of her that are not at all furthered by the fan-service artwork shown to us.
Because putting someone's butt right in someone's face is typical of a covet operation, right?
Anyway, Deadpool takes up his weapons and decides to take covert to a whole new meaning...so basically he jumps out and takes out the Headhunters, classic. I mean, I'm not surprised, and it goes to show that Dr. Swanson really has no idea who she is literally dealing with.
But, as foreshadowed by our clever mercenary, another wave of Headhunters arrives and captures the two of them. Swanson laments she never wanted it to come to this, and the two partake in some comedic banter before they are brought before the Shaman. He speaks some foreign language but a dialogue box translates it to: "This man is a tool, take him to the Holy One" and it is freaking hilarious. It also makes you wonder if that's the literal translation from the writer, or if it's just comedy. It's those deep questions that drive the story.
So the two are brought before the holy one who is revealed to be...
Marvel Zombie Universe Deadpool's head YES that is amazing.
If Deadpool's ego wasn't enough at the beginning of the book, then how's about two Deadpool's, and one is literally revered as a god!
Makes the rest of the series worth reading. Then again, it is Deadpool, so it'd be worth reading anyway.
Regardless, this comic is great. It's hilarious, it's bright, and it's a ton of fun. Like I said, it's free on comixology, so do yourself a favor and read it. There are many jokes within the book to make you laugh and always a ton of pop-culture references pouring out of it.
Comics have a bad tendency to require readers to know some knowledge about the book and so most of them have information on the front page, but it's books like these that make me appreciate a good #1. Who cares about what's going on in the current universe? This is just a fun story for you to read and get a good laugh out of. You don't need a story for the ages, you just need a good enough story to have you keep reading. The reveal that Deadpool is a god to these people is hilarious and the reveal that they somehow have his zombie's head is even better.
Next week, though, we travel to a brand new area: New Years Eve of 1941, where we shall take a look at the origins of Wonder Woman and her Invisible Jet in "Sensation Comics #1"
