Goku vs. Superman--Who wins?

I'll give my answer at the end, because, what good is an answer without an explanation?

I figured I would answer the age-old question mostly because I have been playing a lot of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z lately and that gets me to thinking. I'll give my thoughts on that game soon, too, don't you worry.

Most people always wonder who would win in a fight: Batman or Superman? That answer is easier than it looks, it's obviously Batman. But, that's important right now. Right now we get down to the most famous super hero and anime's poster boy: Superman and Goku.

Both have similar origins. They're from a dying race that saw their planet explode and just escaped it. Except Krypton wasn't blown up by a space lord, nor as Jor-El nearly as cool as Bardock. Just Saiyan. However, Superman did not necessarily train to get his powers, they were always there and adapted with him over time. Goku had to train a lot, even die, to get his powers to where they are now.

This debate circles around most all Superman lore, but I will not include Dragon Ball GT because that is not canon to the Dragon Ball universe. However, I will include the movies, even the newest one, Battle of Gods so to account for the Super Saiyan God form.

And before I can get into the nitty-gritty stuff here, I have to give some exposition on the traits of both our combatants before explaining how the fight would go down and who would win. We'll start with the one everyone already knows about:

Superman

Now like I said, Superman is from another planet, Krytpon, thus making him alienated to most of Earth's atmospheric features. Over time he was able to adapt and then prove himself far superior to those conditions, as shown through his super strength, super speed, flight, laser-vision, x-ray vision and perfectly combed hair.

Thus Earth's gravity hardly affects Superman, giving him major bonus points. Superman also draws most of his power from Earth's sun, so he sort of like a solar super hero. No, that has nothing to with sunlight. Since Earth is so much closer to its star than Krypton was, he is able to draw more from the solar energy. And since even at night the Earth is really any farther from the Sun, he still retains his powers. So even in crappy weather Superman is still Superman.

Everyone knows that Superman's fatal flaws are exposure to Kryptonite, which will render him weaker since it brings elements of Krypton that he is no longer familiar with. Superman also has the fatal flaw of accidentally letting go of all his power and "whoopsie, there goes Metropolis" as we saw recently in Man of Steel, which is my favorite Superman movie and you can't convince me otherwise.

Superman can also time-travel, since he can fly so fast he can turn back time. In terms of the looming fight with Goku, that's irrelevant, but, I thought I would share it nonetheless. He can, though, fly into Earth's atmosphere with very few problems, unlike Goku, who would suffocate up there.

Goku:

Goku's abilities are almost the same as Superman's, except Superman can't harness energy and do super awesome attacks with them. Nor can he transform into anything.

Goku, like Superman, escaped a dying planet, was found blah blah blah. But, when he was a young boy he wasn't nearly as strong as Superman, though he should have been, since the planet he escaped, Planet Vegeta, had gravity that was 10x that of Earth's. Goku grows up and becomes stronger, and because he has Saiyan blood in his veins, becomes stronger at a faster rate than his allies and enemies and is able to stay in a fight longer. This is also one of Goku's flaws: he tends to fight enemies that he cannot defeat, such as Frieza and Perfect Cell (you could argue Bills, but, eh, that was more of a test of power not so much a fight).

So yes, Goku does have super strength, super speed, and flying abilities. Over the course of the Dragon Ball series, Goku learns all about energy and how to use it for himself and against his enemies, learning techniques such as the famous Kame-hame-ha, Spirit Bomb, Solar Flare, and Dragon Fist, along with releasing vast amounts of energy. He even learns how to teleport following the battle on Namek.

Along with the famous Kame-hame-ha technique, Goku also learns how to ascend his energy levels high enough to transform into a being of legend: a Super Saiyan, in which the radiant energy changes his hair and eye color, as well as greatly boosting his strenght, speed, stamina and energy abilities. Eventually, Goku learns how to ascend beyond this, becoming a Super Saiyan 2 (someone who has ascended past a Super Saiyan) and a Super Saiyan 3.

So, yeah, in order: Kaio-Ken, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3.

In Battle of Z he does become a Super Saiyan God, but, that requires the help of five other Saiyans, so, I'm not entirely sure we'll account for that.

Goku is also a great martial artist, always learning new techniques and is always training. He trains more than he spends time with his family, which isn't really a good thing but it saves the Earth a lot of the time.

Though unlike Superman, Goku does have a limited amount of energy, and each Super Saiyan transformation drains him a little more of it. Plus after fighting intensely for a long time and using very complicated techniques (such as the Instant Transmission Kame-hame-ha used against Cell), Goku can be wiped of energy. He usually keeps a Senzu Bean on him, which are magic beans that can restore one's energy, but also has the Spirit Bomb attack under his belt, where he can get much of the power of the universe in his hands and throw it as a giant energy ball. This takes a minute to charge, though, and rarely does he have that kind of time.

In my opinion, too, Goku has fought way tougher opponents than Superman. Okay, sure, Darkseid is probably stronger than Frieza or Cell, but, against Broly? No way. Broly is unbeatable, the only reason Goku beat him was because they were running out of time in the movie...plus he couldn't transform into a Super Saiyan 3 yet.

The Fight:

Right, so, we have our two combatants. Let me predicate this by saying neither of them will kill each other, but, they will seriously injure each other. Plus let's put this out on a plain so that no civilians get hurt. Okay?

Okay.

So Goku would probably start out in his base state and after finding out how strong Superman is, would default to transforming into a Super Saiyan, relying very little on his energy techniques outside of a few blasts. In my opinion, this would almost be enough to match Superman in strength.

Superman's strength has always been stagnant, it has never really been able to increase, only decrease. As Goku trains, all of his forms get stronger. So just because he is fighting someone in a Super Saiyan 2 state does not mean that his entire body won't get stronger.

Superman has a limited amount of attacks while Goku knows how to fight and can fight well. He is battle smart, it is in his Saiyan blood. So while Superman is throwing around his regular fisticuffs, since that always seems to easily win him the battle because he is so OP (over-powered), Goku is easily about to deal with the repetitiveness.

Now is where the tide begins to turn. Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan 2, my favorite form, and here is where he begins to use his energy attacks to seriously injure Superman. Just because he is the Man of Steel does not mean he is literally invincible, he is still an alien...I wanted to say man but that is technically incorrect, isn't it?

The problem here is that Superman could begin relying on speed while Goku is slowly losing energy, and descending out of a Super Saiyan form would not help him in the slightest. Goku knows not to transform any higher otherwise he will lose energy while Superman retains his, from the Sun. Yet he can't hide forever, though.

Having cut off his energy onslaught, Goku would use Instant Transmission, his teleportation ability, to get in close and get away from Superman to make his attacks. Superman's body won't be able to handle this kind of onslaught for very much longer, despite limitless energy. You can have all the potential energy you want, but, if it doesn't go anywhere, it's useless.

Finally, Superman lets it all go and decides that it is now or never, while Goku has yet to ascend to a Super Saiyan 3. Superman flings Goku into the high air where Goku will have difficult dealing with Superman. Goku now decides to make his final ascension, aiding his body adjsut as well as marking the near end of the fight. As Superman goes to pummel Goku away from Earth, Goku would use the same Super Saiyan 3 Dragon Fist technique he used in Wrath of the Dragon to punch Superman closer to Earth's surface.

Superman, flying down, catches himself, but is unable to find Goku, who uses Instant Transmission, while still charging a Kame-hame-ha, and finally unleashes it on Superman, rendering him unconscious.

The Winner:

Though that was all completely fan-fiction (the fight), I think the outcome would be the same regardless: GOKU would win the fight against Superman because he is both battle smart and has more advanced techniques than Superman. You can be as strong as you want, but, if your opponent is wiser, you will lose. Kind of like in Attack on Titan when Annie and Eren were training--Annie was clearly weaker than Eren, but every time, Eren lost because he was not as good a fighter as Annie.

Thus, in the end, Goku is the stronger hero. He is better than Superman.

See you next time!
