Might Avengers: Age of Ultron be...meh?

Maybe not bad bad (like Iron Man 2) but I mean, with all of the news we've gotten, it certainly isn't pointing us in the entirely correct direction. The toys will sell and the kids will like the explosions, but, what else? What about, you know, respecting the characters?

And hey, maybe it's just me. I'm a HUGE Ultron fan-boy, so I'm very strict about anything done to him. I love his origins and I love his essential invulnerability. He's a great villain and counter for not only Iron Man and Ant-Man (who, haha, is still not in Avengers 2), but for the Avengers overall, defeating them more times than I care to count.
With the news today that Ultron's origins are actually him being created by Tony Stark so he wouldn't have to be Iron Man anymore and that the Earth could have an A.I. sentinel I couldn't help but literally cringe.

In the lore of the Marvel Universe, yeah, I suppose it makes sense. Tony Stark is tired of being Iron Man, I get that, and he thinks he's the smartest man in the world. So that's cool but...

IT IS ULTRON.

Are you kidding me, man? Ultron was created in the likeness of a mind rivaled by few, Dr. Hank Pym, and using his brain patterns. Thus, he developed a consciousness, he developed an Oedipal complex...he became human. It was his drive for humanity and his need to be God that drove him down the path of villainy and ultimately the monster he would become and be known for...and loved by me!

This is a sick joke compared to that. Now, apparently, Ultron becomes evil because he "wants to save us." Since Ultron is meant to protect the Earth, he sees humanity as its primary threat, since humans are violent quite a bit and harmful. Thus, he creates a perfectionist attitude and decides to go all-out against humanity.

He doesn't hate Tony Stark, from what we know. If his only motivation is that he is seeking perfection, then, that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

To go back to the last film, Loki was such a good villain because we knew that not only was there someone above him so he was working to save his own skin, but he was both cunning and wanted to conquer the Earth. He didn't want to just take over the world or destroy it, but he wanted to enslave humanity because he felt he was a rightful king stripped of his throne, and finding a new capable planet, he decides to put his plan into action.

Ultron, in this film, sounds like he just wants to eradicate all humanity because we're a little bad and he wants only perfection. Which is, you know, similar to what Ultron wants but what Ultron wants is a world in his image, not in the one implanted in him.

Because Ultron is, like I said, pretty much human. Which makes him an interesting character. He is also a very cunning character thanks to his background.

Ultron in Age of Ultron, the film, could be interesting if, yes, he was implanted with all the information that Iron Man obtained on all of the heroes from the first film. However, I doubt that will be the case, as why would Tony Stark be stupid enough to try that?

But what really worries me is what the heck is going to go on in this movie.

Obviously, you have the plot with Ultron. That seems to be fairly cut and dry: Iron Man creates Ultron, Ultron goes haywire, Ultron steals other Iron Men (which...weren't they destroyed?), they fight the Avengers because they can't call them Ultron Sentinels because X-Men and blah blah blah. So that's probably deal with about, say, half the team (Banner, Stark, Cap, Black Widow).

Then there's the other plot-point, the one that I am also worried about. The one where it seems Hawkeye is fighting alongside Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. For some reason I keep thinking that this is his way of escaping from Baron von Strucker, but, then Ultron was also in an image, so, I don't know.

My big fear is that (well, mostly that they mess up Ultron) they will force Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver in because you can't have an Ultron story without the Vision and the Scarlet Witch is Vision's wife and Quicksilver is Scarlet Witch's brother and if that is the case then they shouldn't even bother with it. It would be stupid, it would be pointless

I mean, look, I'm all for the three staple Avengers finally getting their spot on the team but I would rather see a decent story without a million plot points and useless characters. If Marvel thinks they can cram nine Avengers, plus an obligatory cameos, alongside mega-star Ultron and Baron von Strucker into a cohesive two and a half hour movie with a decent plot that weaves together fluidly then they have to be writing geniuses. From what it's sounding like, Ultron and von Strucker have nothing in common and are almost on two opposite plains--or at least that's how I'm perceiving it.

I still have hope for this movie, though. Like I said, I'm happy they are adding people and I'm very happy that Ultron is going to make his big-screen appearance. But I am not quite as happy with the origin change, with various plot points that have yet to connect in my head, and with the fact that Iron Man 3 is still considered canon. C'mon guys, the Mandarin...SERIOUSLY.

Plus they've pretty much given away that Hawkeye is gonna die, which sucks by the way, so there's a spoiler they couldn't shut up about.

So, while there is still a ways way until we get to this movie, and a lot can change (looking at you, Comic-Con!), I feel that the recent news was not as exciting as it should be. While the costumes look cool and they're using a true Avengers villain, who looks like the Ultron-ish, I don't believe that they are really doing much to help them. While I'm sure the Hulkbuster will be cool and the fight sequences cooler, it's not looking like this movie will be topping Cap 2 anytime soon.

Your move, DC! CONFIRM GREEN ARROW AND YOU WIN.

I mean.
What.

  1. Also, Quicksilver is not Scarlet Witch's sister. Quicksilver is a boy. He's her brother.

  2. Age of Ultron will be awesome. Joss Whedon can be trusted with these characters. Who cares if Ultron isn't based on Hank Pym, who is so flawed that being based on him would make Ultron less likely to win? His origin is still tied in with the Avengers and you can't judge the extent of his motivation in the film based on rumors and tidbits. The comics and the movies will always be a bit different. Get over it.

  3. This will be my final comment, but one of your contentions is completely invalid. You argue that 9 Avengers can't be crammed into a movie with Ultron, Strucker and assorted cameos unless the movie is being made by writing geniuses. Well, first of all, the movie IS being made by people it would be accurate to call writing geniuses. Not just anyone gets to screenwrite for the movies and work with Joss Whedon. Whedon himself has the lion's share of script control and has indeed proven himself to be brilliant. Beyond that, the comic books routinely cram in 9 characters or more, plus assorted villains and cameos, and still manage to entertain and be cohesive. And it doesn't take anywhere near 2 and 1/2 hours to read most Avengers story arcs. If they can do it on the page, they can easily do it on the screen. To not even try because it might be a challenge would be a cop out. And if Whedon didn't have actual, story-based reasons for wanting to use Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, he could easily have used Vision without them.
