Previously on "Blue Nexus" (#14-#39)...

It's been well over a year since I was able to recap the series. I probably could have done so after our long summer break between parts 22 and 23, but that would be no fun. And, yes, there was a major tone shift and change in direction, but even stretching way back to Part 14 where Sandy revealed she knew who Kyle was and that the Zanderia did have a prison for super villains there were small seeds being planted that would lead up to the big battle against Alucard.

If this is your first time with Blue Nexus, or you have no idea what it is that I'm talking about/ post every other Thursday, then this is the perfect place for you! Actually the perfect place for you is my previous article on this, covering Parts 1 through 13

Once you're all done catching up there, you can come on back here. If you just don't feel like reading through it, here's the basic premise:

Kyle Raiden is a seventeen year-old lacrosse player in Adelita, playing for his high school. His parents mysteriously vanished when he was a little boy and he has held an interest in the universe ever since then. His best friends, Kip and Luke, encourage Kyle to be better than he often thinks he is. When the town is attacked by a powerful alien, a "Demi-War God," named Gargador, Kyle finds a glowing blue bracelet and through it is able to access the power of the Nexus, an extra dimension. He dons the name Blue Nexus and joins the Zanderia, the galaxy's coalition of super-beings, and begins protecting the Earth. Along the way, he gains romantic interest in an alien escapee named Brenda, also called Shindari, and meets another member of the Nexus, called Hood Nexus.

So, eight months following the victory over Black Nexus, a villain capable of using negative energy (opposite the Nexus's), Kyle and Brenda are hunting down a small group of super villains trying to make a daring escape from East City. They dispatch them quite easily and we get a look at our first siting of the Cube, an underground, impenetrable and inescapable water fortress where several powerful super-villains are already holed up.

After deciding to go to the community pool, they run into a girl who has had a mad crush on Kyle for a while named Sandy. Sandy reveals that several months ago she saw Kyle transforming into Blue Nexus, but withheld the information until now, since they'd both been way too busy and Sandy didn't want to drop a huge bomb on him like this. Kyle becomes shaky about all of this but is reassured that she will not blackmail him, but instead asks if she can help him out. He declines, of course, and Sandy is frustrated as a result.

Life goes on for a few more days until the duo of Lightning Tiger and Thunder Tiger assault Adelita High School in search of Blue Nexus, who is rumored to be around there. Kyle tries to fend them off, but Sandy shows off some strange power which aids in their escape. Kyle scours the town for them the next day and they re-engage in battle, forcing Kyle temporarily into his Wave Two state of the Nexus form, where he can tap into even more of its power. However, their finishing combo move is enough to knock all three of them out, as well as obliterate the school's baseball stadium.

Fire Tiger, their leader and much stronger than the two of them, arrives, but Phoenix, a member of the Zanderia and their P.R. guy, arrives to take him on. Their battle is relatively even until Hood Nexus arrives and they crush Fire Tiger with his superior strength, which Phoenix observes is indeed greater than Kyle's. The two await Kyle's return to consciousness and discuss that the Tiger Trio are more powerful than ever, and it's not without some hidden source.

Meanwhile, Professor Boomer, who was a major player before and is seeking out the Nexus bracelet for Cata, a War God, watches on. He observes that they may need to meet with a man known as the Benefactor over in East City, who can grant people more power. His fellow scientist, Luna, agrees, but is unsure if the Benefactor will really want to help. Boomer suggests that they just let Gargador be a subject to it, and Luna agrees.

In the ensuing few days, the community comes together in a relief effort for the school. Animosity toward the supers starts to grow there, and Kyle becomes frustrated with them. His English teacher, Mr. Evart, tries to come to his defense, alongside his friends. Mr. Evart becomes a light for Kyle at school, where the school begins to see more and more faults in the super beings of the world. However, that light is extinguished when Gargador, in his human state, returns to the school.

He and Kyle are set to do battle when Gargador shifts gears and incapacitates Brenda with a magical blade, cutting her off from her magic completely. Kyle rushes her to the Zanderia Moon base, where they are able to stabilize her. Lalay, a Zanderia member and its only other female, tells him that she will heal, but much slower than normal. Kyle stays by her side for several hours until Riko, the Martian leader of the Zanderia, sends him to Vermont to observe some anomaly going on there.

Kyle does so, knowing it'll serve as a good distraction. After fighting what he believes to be the town's haunt, he finds that there is actually a giant demonic monster living in their lake that is corrupting their populace, consuming them. Kyle tries to cut them off from the source but finds himself unable to do so. One of them, in a fleeting moment of sanity, tells Kyle that in order for the other thousands of lives to be spared, he must kill the monster...and thereby kill everyone else. Kyle complies, and the battle has him shaken.

He becomes far more restless and on edge as he returns to school, and not even Mr. Evart is able to get through to him. Sandy asks where Brenda has been, and informs him of a rumor that there may be some strange people out in the woods. Kyle heads there, to Magus Forest, and indeed finds a hidden tribe of mages. He begs for help and gets a catalyst that will expedite Brenda's healing factor. The Grand Elder warns Kyle of a great magical evil that has planted seeds all around him, and when it grows it will cause great destruction. Just outside the village he is attacked by the shadow, and is informed that in order to win, he may need to go to the Nether.

The trip to Magus Forest does little to help him, though, and he begins going out more and more as the Blue Nexus, putting himself in serious danger. For three days in a row, he does combat with Gargador. By the third day, though, Gargador defeats him with ease, leaving Kyle for dead. He is brought to a nearby hospital, where his injuries are tended to and his identity kept secret.

Boomer, meanwhile, takes some of the Nexus energy that Gargador has managed to steal from Kyle in their fights and stores it. A young, female archer arrives at his base and informs him that the Benefactor is now in control of the situation, and that they need to directly align themselves with him soon if they want to stay on the winning side.

After Kyle is released, and speaks with a haunting being known as Alucard, he and Brenda catch up. Hood Nexus comes and checks up on him as well, and has also heard of a Benefactor over in East City. He and Phoenix go to check out the city. Phoenix is attacked by a man with super strength but is able to hold him off. Gargador attacks the two, subduing Phoenix. Kyle, hearing through the Zanderia communicator that Gargador took down Phoenix, immediately goes to the aid of Hood Nexus and the two team up for the first time since battling Black Nexus.

The mysterious archer, though, arrives and the combatants are forced to flee. Boomer, back at his base, notes that this archer is indeed Sandy and that she has a strong connection to the Benefactor. After the battle, she informs him that the Benefactor requests his presence. At school the next day, Kyle witnesses Sandy kill two planted Aberrants, and her magic becomes stronger for it. Luna is unsure about whether or not they really should trust this Benefactor given what Sandy just did, but Boomer goes anyway. Hearing that Boomer is headed for East City, Detective Patton--who has been helping them in the cases against Gargador and the Benefactor--arrives at the school, and tells the gang to move out against Boomer. Kyle heads to East City to confront Boomer and the Benefactor directly.

What he finds first, though, is Luna, who had been falling more and more ill as they approached East City. Kyle brings her to the doctor that saved him, and she gives her thanks. Kyle then finds Boomer and the Benefactor, who subdues Kyle to some odd, grey area where he is stabbed by a person that closely resembles Brian, a friend of his from lacrosse. When Kyle awakens, he has no memory of who he is.

Jericho arrives, and Kyle snaps out of it. Jericho informs Kyle that he is in the Nether, where some beings are sent as a sort of limbo. None have escaped the Nether, but there is a way to do so: exchange places with a soul in the living world. Jericho expresses interest in Kyle and the situation with Alucard, who revealed himself to him, and tells him that he has the power to help Kyle in their fight against him.

Here we enter the "Alucard Arc" of the series, where the titular character becomes the centerpiece around which all the ensuing events revolve. Brenda brings a soulless and practically dead Kyle to the Zanderia Moon base to be kept safe. She and Hood Nexus then go to where there is a massive amount of energy being stored, down into Boomer's base. The two do combat against Sandy, but she proves to be no match for the heroes. Brenda tails Sandy while Hood Nexus stays behind. Boomer, has fled, and meets up with Mr. Evart. Alucard destroys the base, and building, with Hood Nexus trapped inside while Evart sets Boomer's house ablaze and stabs him.

Evart returns to the base to retrieve what's left of the magic following the magical explosion and reveals to Patton that he is, in fact, Alucard. He spares her to have a witness before leaving. Boomer is admitted to a hospital and meets up with Luna again, who has decided she wants to save this city from Alucard's coming wrath after her near-death experience. Boomer claims to have a weapon that can defeat Alucard, and Hood Nexus overhears this. The three head back for Adelita but are attacked by Sandy, who kills Luna while Alucard watches.

In the Nether, Kyle has begun training with a dark, powerful magic. Luna appears, and Jericho asks if she would sacrifice herself for Kyle. She agrees, but makes him promise to help Boomer liberate East City. Kyle agrees and the transfer is made. When Kyle awakens, though, he is not himself and immediately attacks Phoenix and Brenda in the Zanderia Moon base. He is possessed by the evil of the Nether and the Demon magic, and is more than a match for Brenda. Phoenix teleports them close to Adelita, where Luke and Kip show up. Brenda manages to subdue him and cleanse him of much of the Demon magic by replacing the Nexus bracelet on him.

When Kyle comes to, he expresses regret for what he's done to Aequitas and his friends. He tells them that he and Brenda have to get to East City soon, or it will be destroyed. Much to their horror, though, they find that it's already under attack by Riko and Lalay. Meanwhile, Hood Nexus helps Boomer back at the lab in fueling a super-suit that requires the infinite energy of the Nexus to run. Boomer takes a little more than necessary and bursts off. Hood Nexus recovers and is found by Kyle and Brenda.

They head for East City to engage the fallen heroes while the city is being evacuated to minimize the collateral damage. Hood Nexus takes on Lalay, Sandy and Brenda begin their fight again--Sandy much stronger than before--, and Kyle finds himself against Riko, the strongest of the bunch and powered up thanks to Alucard. The fight is even, though Kyle is tempted to use his Demon magic. Boomer arrives and subdues Riko when Gargador appears, also enhanced by Alucard. Gargador calls Boomer a traitor to Cata, but Boomer no longer cares about that anymore, and instead is focused on living up to the promises he made to Luna.

Kyle defeats Gargador finally and he reunites with Hood Nexus to go take on Alucard. Brenda joins them presently, and while at first it seems like they have strength in numbers, Alucard forces open a portal to the Nether and casts them into it, eliminating them from the game. They arrive and Jericho is happy to find Kyle managed to survive. Here we also learn that Brian is in fact the Hood Nexus, and that Kyle and Brenda are able to use their abilities (Kyle because he was already tainted by the Nether and Brenda because her own magic is reflecting the powers of the Nether). Brian is also able to transform, though those of a good heart should be unable to. Before they can question it, they are attacked by their doppelgangers.

Meanwhile, Boomer fights as the sole survivor of the big battle and is fighting various monsters to help in the ongoing evacuation process. The police have cleared almost all of the streets, and the city is nearly emptied. Boomer continues to fight as much as he can but he is growing weary. Alucard himself comes out to fight Boomer. In the Nether, the heroes are no match for their own doppelgangers until they come together as a team, defeating them and using their combined powers to rip open the hole to the world of the living, soaring back toward the battle. Boomer, incapacitated by Alucard, watches as he prepares tons of Demon magic but is cut off by the arrival of the heroes.

Together they manage to overpower Alucard, but Alucard pulls a fast one on them and reveals that he has kept one section of the city under his own guard and that he will now send the Demon monsters after them. Brian and Brenda fly off to save them, leaving Kyle against Alucard. At first, the fight is even. Alucard begins to get into a groove, though, and despite Kyle's best efforts, he is unable to defeat Alucard. The fight with Brian and Brenda hardly goes any better, with Brenda losing magic fast and Brian being the only capable fighter to stand up to wave after wave of monsters.

Kyle manages to tap back into the Wave Two energy and overwhelms Alucard in the awesome power, destroying him for good. He passes out and wakes up some time later, practically unable to walk as a result of the battle. Patton arrives and informs him that he's done a real good job, and jokingly admits to being happy she can officially know Kyle is the Blue Nexus. After his power gets restored close enough to normal, Kyle flies off and finds Boomer, who is happy that they won and wonders if Luna would be proud of him.

Three days later, the relief efforts continue around the city. Riko and Lalay are the most shaken, but Kyle reassures them that things will get better. The hot topic of supers and their place in the world resurfaces, but Kyle finds solace in those who do believe in them and their willingness to help. Sandy also emerges finally, where Lalay suggest they add her to the Zanderia, as having a second mage couldn't hurt anyone. At an emergency meeting of the U.N., Mr. Aplin approaches Phoenix with an offer to let the Zanderia become a government-run organization. Phoenix declines, and informs the leaders of the world that the Zanderia will continue to be a self-sustaining entity and that they will continue to do their duty, no matter what happens or if some government-run organization should get in the way, nearly declaring war against them.

At the Cube later that evening, Kyle informs Boomer on what's been going on and the two talk about Luna a little more. Kyle promises to come back to visit some more until Boomer is finally released, and Boomer gives Kyle a warning about Cata, saying that if she does hear about this, her wrath may be one that none of them survive.

And yeah, that just about wraps up the events that happened last time. Obviously were some smaller touches in there and some other bits that I couldn't include, but you can check out the parts themselves for that if you want. As for what comes next? I can promise a lot more magic, as the next major arc will focus on a possible war that may break out. There will also be more adventures to brand new places, like new planets or cities, and more super heroes to come with them. And even...time-travel? Well, you'll just have to find out for yourself when Blue Nexus returns in two weeks with "Blue Nexus #40 - A Strange Case of Quiet"!

See you then.
